As the title says this is a Complete guide on using your iPhone headphones to control everything, iPhone, iPod, Mac and the WORLD. Some not so obvious tips like txt to speech (oh and we are not taking over the world)
Everyone knows the classic iPod and iPhone headphones, everyone knows the new EarPods, you see someone with a white set of earphones and chances are you can say, they have an Apple. Although with the multiple colours available, it’s a little harder to spot now.
About the earphones
Are they the best headphones? No
Are they good quality? Yes.
Are the reasonable priced? Hmm
Do they come with a load of goodies? Oh yeah
Apple originally launched their Earphones with remote back in 2008 and their later EarPods in 2012, there are rumours flowing about which we will discuss later about whats coming up next.
What can we do with them?
What most of don’t realise is the extra control these earphones or more the remote gives us. Its much more than a simple answer hang up or changing the volume of your Facebook video
Below you will see what works with what, want to dictate on your Mac? Sure thing!
Want to take your Mac to a concert and take a selfie? Well probably not

How to
Some of the above are just obvious but some maybe not, some in the above format are not that clear so here is a little more on what you will need to control your iPhone with the remote
Reject an incoming call
Have a call coming in and you can’t take it, simply hold down the middle button for a few seconds whilst ringing and job done.
Switch calls/Place on hold
When on the phone and another call comes in (popular you) then you have two options, you can either put the 1st caller on hold with a simple click of the middle button, want to switch back? Then do the same again
Hang up & answer new call
Well what if you want to take the new call but are bored with your current person, Apple have you covered, just hold down the middle button and the new person can chat away whilst hanging up on the 1st caller.
iPod only options
A few added bonuses for those who have their device just for music, this is especially great with the iPad Shuffle due to having no screen.
Hear song, title and artist, whilst your track is playing just hold down the middle button and you will have these read out to you.
Change playlist
If you do the above and continue to hold down, you will get a beep and the playlist will be read, - + skip through the playlists all being read out to you and the middle button selects the playlist.
Selfie / Pictures
One of the most hidden yet useful features I find is the Photo Shot, pressing on the screen or the buttons on your iPhone always seem to move the camera about at that critical time, when pressing on the earphones remote, it doesn’t impact your shot, combine it with a selfie stick and you don’t need the separate Bluetooth remote, just press + or -.
MacBook only options
We are unpleasantly surprised that Apple have put so many features and ways to control your smaller gadgetZ but haven’t added anything for the MacBook. There have been rumours that Mac’s will get Siri but of course it’s unconfirmed. The only feature we found is the dictate, and its not even a feature of the remote.
It’s still simple enough, just double click FN on the keyboard and your earphones with Mic become a Dictaphone, shame it can’t control the Mac though.
New iPhone 7 headphones
There are plenty of rumors going around that Apple are ditching the 3.5mm Jack in the iPhone 7 and instead either a bluetooth or magnet options are being used. This could change all of the above but am sure they will not leave us disappointed.
Coming up Blogs
Well that’s the lot, hopefully you can control your iPhone without taking it out your pocket, if we have missed any then send a message over and we will be sure to add it in.
We will soon be adding a “What can Siri do” Blog, another un tapped option I am sure we all used back in 2011 when she was new, but now perhaps a little unloved. If you want to be notified of this or any of our offers, please sign up to our mailing list.
